Seating and wheelchair access
Our fleet includes saloon cars with 4 passenger seats, MPVs with 5 and minibuses with 6 to 8. Some minibuses take 2 or 3 wheelchairs. The seating layout needs to allow room for passengers, accompanying staff and any equipment.
Most of our wheelchair-accessible vehicles have a manual ramp. The driver helps with boarding, together with the passenger assistant where one is assigned.

Drivers and passenger assistants
Every driver and passenger assistant must have an enhanced DBS check. Smart Group arranges the check on their behalf.
Routes without an assistant generally carry passengers who can board independently. The driver knocks at the door, takes the passenger to school and returns in the afternoon.
Passenger assistants sit in the back with the passengers. They complete PATS, first aid and behaviour management courses. Drivers are trained through their council licensing, which includes safeguarding.
Children usually keep the same driver and passenger assistant. If one of them is on leave, off sick or has an emergency, a relief driver or assistant covers the journey and we let the family know by WhatsApp or phone.
At school, children are taken to reception or handed over to a member of staff.
On routes with a passenger assistant, if a passenger becomes upset or unwell, the assistant reports it straight away to our office and to the school or parent. We then report it to the council and the parents. On routes without an assistant, the driver reports it to our office, and we let the parents, the school and the council know.
Before the first journey
When the council awards a contract, we assign a driver, a vehicle and, where the route needs one, a passenger assistant. Our office then calls the parent or carer to go through the details, the timings and any questions.
Families meet the driver or assistant before the first journey only if the council asks for it. We tell families about delays, absences and incidents by WhatsApp or phone. We contact the council only when there is something it needs to know about.
Let the transport team know about changes to a passenger’s needs or equipment before their next journey.
