WhatsApp usWhat does a passenger assistant do?
A passenger assistant is there to help any of the passengers in the vehicle, while the driver concentrates on the journey. The support needed varies by route and passenger.
Your job is to keep passengers safe, secure and comfortable. You sit in the back with the passengers, help each of them with their individual needs and support the driver throughout the journey.
If a passenger becomes upset or unwell, the assistant reports it straight away to our office and to the school or parent.
The role calls for patience, clear communication and an interest in working with children and young people.
Experience and training
You can apply without school transport experience. Experience in education, care, customer service or volunteering may be useful to share.
Every driver and passenger assistant must have an enhanced DBS check. Smart Group arranges and pays for the check.
Passenger assistants complete PATS, first aid and behaviour management courses.
The team can explain the role and the checks needed before starting work.
Working alongside the driver
Most of our wheelchair-accessible vehicles have a manual ramp. The driver helps with boarding, together with the passenger assistant where one is assigned.
Hours, pay and location
We are always recruiting passenger assistants in Worcestershire. Morning journeys run from 7am until 10am at the latest, and afternoon journeys from 2pm until 5pm at the latest. Times vary by route.
Pay is competitive and depends on the route. Most of our passenger assistants are self-employed, and you can ask to be employed instead.
